Last week, I decided to do a full moon spell. ⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆
So witchy, right? I found a few promising ones at Mind Body Green and The Daily Struggle, and I decided the self-love ritual sounded comforting. It directed me to choose a cleansing water – “moon water, rose water, Florida water, etc.” and face a mirror.

OK, I wondered, what the heck is Florida water? Does it contain essence or alligator ? So the first thing I did was get on the Google to find that Florida Water sounds like a delightful product. But, alas, I have none.
I do have some rosewater in a spray bottle, so back to the spell: I need to sit in front of a mirror, and wipe it down with the water, clearing away any illusions getting in the way of fully loving myself. Seems easy enough.
I squirted rose water onto my vanity mirror and grabbed a tissue to start wiping. Ugh. Streaks. My god, I thought, this mirror is filthy. I squirted a little more. Still streaking. But I was determined to complete the spell, so I got up and rummaged under the sink until I found some glass cleaner. I sprayed some of that, but the Kleenex was now falling apart and leaving lint everywhere.
So I went into the kitchen for some paper towels, returning to clean the mirror and get back to this self-love thing. In the process, I knocked down half the cosmetic bottles on my vanity.

After reorganizing my vanity and cleaning the mirror, I picked up the rosewater again because I still wanted to finish this self-love spell if it killed me. That’s when I noticed that it contains aloe, which, it occurred to me, may have been a contributing factor to the streaking. Not that the mirror wasn’t dirty, but now that it was clean, this rosewater probably still wouldn’t work.
Slumping in front of the mirror, I was not feeling a whole lot of self-love.
Then, I met my own eyes and had to grin. What a typical comedy of errors. In the theater of the absurd that is my life, this was a stellar performance.
And it was not a total loss. I set a silent intention to, before the next full moon, create my own rosewater with simply rose petals and distilled water. Maybe next time I’ll make some moon water. But for certain, next time, I’ll take the extra step of making sure my mirror is clean first. It occurs to me that cleaning my mirror can be a part of my own full moon ritual, and I can offer myself a little extra love for making sure my mirror is clean at least once a month.

I didn’t mention this little debacle to my husband (or anyone else, until now), who is totally supportive but does tend to roll his eyes a bit over my witching activity. But out of the blue, two days later, he surprised me with a bouquet of flowers, which contains two beautiful big pink roses – fragrant and perfect to use for making rosewater.
Life is messy. It’s not as easy as the internet would have us believe. Like all good witches before me, I’m going to be persistent – try, fail, and try again, taking what others have done and adjusting the steps to find practices and rituals that work for me.
I may not know what I’m doing or exactly where I’m going, but I think the signs are pointing me in the right direction.
