Witch Quest

It’s September. Lammas/Lughnasadh and Labor Day have come and gone. The hot weather seems to have cooled a bit (for now), but that crisp fall air hasn’t yet blown in. School is in session, but the autumnal equinox is still more than a week away. Is it just me, or is everyone in that pre-autumn, post-summer malaise?

The moon is new, and if you’re feeling low energy (like me), that might be a valid reason for it – at least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

I’m playing with an idea I call “Witch Quest.” I thought it would be fun to create a set of cards with instructions. The idea was for those interested in witchcraft to try a bit of everything in a magical journey to connect with their inner sorcerer. 

Here are some ideas from my Witch Quest that I’m going to use for the next week or so to shift my energy. Maybe they’ll help you, too:

Set Your Daily Intention

Start the day with a moment of calm. Just sit and breathe for a minute. 

Draw a Tarot or oracle card, or randomly choose a passage from a book that inspires you. Meditate for a few minutes on what that message might mean for your life right now. 

Based on that message, set an intention to be who you need to be today. Maybe select a reminder to carry with you, such as a gem or crystal, a piece of jewelry, an essential oil or cologne, or a particular outfit, to remind you of your intention. 

Cast a Candle Spell

Think of something you want and find a small candle, such as a birthday candle. If you have a choice, pick a color that resonates with your wish. 

Place it in a safe holder and light it up. Sit with the flame and focus on what you want until the candle burns out. Because the moon is currently waxing, an example might be growth or something you want to manifest during the coming lunar cycle.

There are a few things you can do before burning the candle to make your spell even stronger: You can carve your candle with a word or symbol that represents that goal. You can also anoint your candle with a few drops of essential oil. You can even dress an oiled candle by rolling it in some crushed herbs. Do a bit of research or give some thought to what symbols, oils, and/or herbs might symbolize what you want.

Charm Your Environment

Create an environment that serves how you want your life to be by using essential oils, candles, or some incense to evoke a positive mindset when you smell it. Place a few drops in a small dish to scent a room where you spend a lot of time. There may be a few that you’d like to use in different rooms or situations to set an appropriate ambiance. 

Do the same with visual elements, like pictures, objets d’art, or elements from nature like stones, feathers, plants, etc. 

Play music or ambient sounds that set the desired mood.

Surround yourself with sights, scents, and sounds that make you feel how you want to feel, whether that’s relaxed, energized, inspired, or just plain happy.

Do Some Practical Magic

Make something from “scratch.” Try being a kitchen witch by making a meal or baking a tasty treat. 

If you’re already a kitchen witch, try something different like brewing beer, sewing, needlework, or another craft such as paper, soap, candles, or woodcraft. 

Don’t worry about the quality of the finished item, just enjoy the process.

Connect with Your Energy

Practice stopping at different times during the day to notice the energy in the atmosphere. Is it calm? Tense? Is there a lot of movement or sound, or is it still or quiet? At any given moment, notice how you feel and how the energy of your environment is affecting you. 

As you do this more often, you will become more adept at sensing your energy and using it to your benefit.

Conjure Sweet Dreams

End each day with an evening spell to learn what you can from what your life has brought you in the last twenty-four hours. 

If things have gone well, congratulate yourself on manifesting your intention. 

If things haven’t gone well, don’t beat yourself up. Sometimes there are forces out of our control. Meditate for a few moments on how to move forward positively in all aspects, and release everything else into the universe. 

Then get a good night’s sleep.


Autumn will be here before we know it, bringing a new season to celebrate and new quests to conquer.
