As a newcomer to witchcraft, I’ve been dabbling in different practices with mixed success. Mostly I’m realizing how many things I already practice that fit nicely into my new milieu. One of these is regular meditation, which has had a magical effect on my life.
I don’t need to expound on the scientific evidence that meditating on a regular basis improves your health: just Google “medical benefits of meditation,” and you’ll find all you need. I also don’t need to give a tutorial on meditating because online resources also abound on that.
One of my favorite quotes is by Catholic mystic Angelus Silesius: “God, whose love and joy are present everywhere, can’t come to visit you unless you aren’t there.” It inspired this poem: an attempt to express how I meditate and what it does for me.
Chakra Meditation on a Sunny Day
I am meditating in my backyard.
After a hectic day it is quiet and still,
And still I sit in the here and now.
I loosen my muscles, from my face to my toes.
I quiet my mind and breathe.
I smell the grass and the river.
I feel the sun on my skin.
I notice the sounds around me:
The wind and the water,
The birds in song,
The cars on the bridge a mile down.
I wonder if those sounds were there all along
And where was I that I did not hear them?
But calm, it is still and now I am here.
I focus on the base of my spine, and I feel the earth below it.
I am rooted; I’m grounded – I am safe.
Energy flows to my sacrum
And I am creation’s joyful reflection.
My core is strong, my heart surrounded by love.
The warmth moves in my throat – I am truthful expression.
And then between my brows, centered in my brain,
The third eye opens and light pours in,
Crowning me with peace.
I am one with the universe and we flow through it all
And still I sit in the here and now,
And all that I need is here.
