Halfling

The air is thick with dusk and grey

Shadows in the twilight

Lit with stars near and hovering

Like a lamp glowing through a study window

Dark outside in the crisp air

Where you can touch the universe

But safe in the golden light.

Once upon my parent’s big bed

I nestled under my father’s shoulder

As he read me the tale of a king.

I could feel the night wind

As my heart galloped

Wishing I could be astride an adventure

But somehow safe in Daddy’s arms.

Twilight is neither day nor night,

But where I yearn to be:

An elusive and ever-shifting state

Of reaching for comfort;

Inside yet outside;

Safe yet free.
